Cloudflare & TTFB Optimization: Speed Improvement for an International Magento 2 Webshop
Google’s Core Web Vitals, specifically Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and Time to First Byte (TTFB), are direct ranking factors for organic search results. For Maxifleur, which serves European customers from the Netherlands, the geographical distance to international visitors was a measurable bottleneck: visitors further away experienced a higher TTFB, which negatively impacted both user experience and search results.
What is Cloudflare and what does it do? Cloudflare is a global CDN and security platform that handles web traffic via edge servers located geographically close to the end user. For webshops, this means shorter loading times for international visitors, less load on the origin server, and structurally better Core Web Vitals scores, without having to modify the Magento infrastructure.
Younify fully configured Cloudflare for the Maxifleur environment: DNS migration, SSL termination at the edge, and targeted cache rules for static assets. The caching strategy was then refined by combining Magento 2 full-page caching with Cloudflare edge caching via cache-control headers and URL-specific TTL settings.
A specific TTFB bottleneck was addressed: the initialization of the Magento session with every page load caused unnecessary server delay. Younify implemented a session-skip mechanism for cached pages, combined with stale-while-revalidate caching. The results were monitored via Cloudflare Analytics and Real User Monitoring, with fine-tuning based on measured p75 and p95 values per country.
Following the optimizations, the average TTFB for international visitors decreased substantially. LCP scores improved across all measured countries, resulting in better Core Web Vitals reporting in Google Search Console and a positive effect on organic rankings for international search terms.
