Customers wanting a complete composition had to determine for themselves which pot matched which plant in terms of size and style—a time-consuming and error-prone process. This led to returns, lower customer satisfaction, and missed upsell opportunities. Standard Magento bundle functionality offered insufficient flexibility for the visual and size-related logic required.
What is a product configurator in Magento 2? A product configurator is a custom interactive module that guides customers step-by-step through assembling a product or combination. While standard Magento bundles are static, a configurator offers dynamic filtering, real-time price calculation, and a visually driven selection experience, all without the customer having to leave the product page.
Younify built a custom pot-plant configurator as a Magento 2 module, displayed on selected product pages. The customer goes through three steps: a visual plant size selector, a filtered pot assortment based on the chosen size, and the direct addition of the complete combination to the shopping cart as a composite product.
The filter logic is based on product attributes in Magento: each pot has a ‘suitable for’ attribute that defines compatible plant sizes. If a customer selects a plant size, the configurator automatically filters the available pots. The total price is updated in real time. Following the initial launch, server performance was optimized, the configurator logic was restructured for stability, and the visual finish was refined in successive iterations.
Customers ordering via the configurator always add at least two products—plant and pot—instead of separate purchases, which directly contributes to a higher average order value. The return rate for combination orders is significantly lower than for individual purchases: customers who assemble their own combination are more confident in their choice. The configurator has since become one of the most used interactive elements on the website and serves as a powerful conversion tool on the product pages of larger artificial plants.
